At long last, OCEAN SQUARES is back. Tons of fun!!
Now that the long, drawn-out election is over, Ocean Squares is dancing again, tonight, Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at Pilgrim Hall in Pilgrim United Church, 2020 Chestnut Street, Carlsbad, CA, from 7 to 9 pm.
Pilgrim Hall is next to and attached to the church (unless we get shunted to the nursery again!). Pilgrim Church is on the northeast corner of Chestnut and Monroe, in Carlsbad. No—not the Mormon Temple—the opposite corner!
From the 78, exit El Camino, go south to Chestnut and turn right, down to Monroe. Church is on the near right corner. Small parking off Chestnut, and more parking around the corner.
We invite you to join us for an enjoyable evening of square dancing. Everyone is invited, whether you already know how to square dance or not. We will show you how! You don’t need a partner, and there is no dress code.
We are one of twelve gay square dance clubs in southern California, and about 85 in the U.S., Canada, and several other countries, including Japan and Denmark!
Hope to see you tonight!

Believing in the importance of providing music for all, the mission of the Notre Temps String Ensemble, Inc. is to provide access to string music making to the members of the community regardless of musical experience or age.
Through structured rehearsals and concerts the ensemble members will gain basic knowledge in music making in a non-competitive setting.
The Notre Temps String Ensemble is a community based orchestra founded in 2008 under the direction of Michael Tagart. It exists to provide opportunities for music making to individuals who otherwise would not be given them. It is rare that the chance to meet in an orchestral setting is provided to people outside of well funded schools or those who dedicated much of their childhood to learning an instrument. In an effort to promote the highest standards possible, most existing community orchestras have audition requirements for entrance or age restrictions.
Notre Temps (Our Time) String Ensemble is comprised of over twenty members varying in age and ability level. These members come from all walks of life and represent many of the communities throughout the greater San Diego area. Connected by their love for music, the ensemble is not only an educational experience, but a social setting as well. It is through this love for music that our members are able to transcend the stigmas typically associated with playing an instrument later in life. The Notre Temps String Ensemble welcomes both members who have played their respective instruments earlier in life, or those who have recently made the decision to learn to play.
The Notre Temps String Ensemble does not hold entrance auditions and any member of the community is warmly welcomed to join. Seating arrangements are fashioned to provide an optimal experience both musically and socially to its members. The repertoire is selected for its beauty and playability.
The ensemble anticipates expanding its activities to provide music related opportunities to others throughout the community. Through our community involvement, the Notre Temps String Ensemble hopes to convey the message that music is for everyone.

Do nuns really have more fun? The Divine Sister is an inspired homage to every Hollywood film ever centered on the convent. Written by Charles Busch (the comic genius behind such classics as The Tale of the Allergists Wife; Die, Mommie, Die!; Psycho Beach Party; and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom) this is the gleefully twisted tale of an indomitable Mother Superior trying to cope with a young postulant experiencing "visions," a sensitive schoolboy in need of mentoring, a mysterious nun visiting from Berlin, and a former suitor intent on luring her away from her vows. No nun, whether singing or flying, is spared and no Mary left un-hailed in this loving parody that dares to take a look beneath the habit.
Join the San Diego DREAM Team and Canvass for a Cause for a local discussion on UNDOCUQUEER, the real story of queer immigrants here in San Diego.
How are the stories of coming out as queer and coming out as undocumented similar? How are they different? What are the factors (like the border) that make it so hard to organize here in San Diego, and how do we face that challenge? How does this affect families? And what would TRUE queer-inclusive immigration reform look like? Join us at El Centro to hear some answers and continue building the movement!
WHY DO WE USE THE WORD QUEER?
Although originally used as a slur and offensive word, QUEER has since been reclaimed by the LGBTQIA community. It represents being outside of the heteronormative mindset or the gender binary. It is definitely more accepted by younger generations. It is often seen as an umbrella term for those who do not identify as "straight" or "cisgender," including pansexual, bisexual, gender queer and other sexualities and identities.
---------------------------------------------------------------
We are looking to display art (5-10 pieces) the night of the event, particularly themed or inspired by queer or immigrant experiences or artists. Please contact field@canvassforacause.org if you are interested in displaying or want more details.
