Marriage Equality USA - Canvass OUT-Reach For Equality

Project OUT-Reach is an in-person campaign that puts a face to the issue every single Saturday.

10am – Get a training and coffee
11am – Go out with a buddy that’s done the canvass before
2pm – Return to base to report back your experience and get lunch
3pm – Out the door to enjoy the rest of your weekend knowing that you made a difference

Project OUT-Reach – a project where we are going into the areas around San Diego County where we lost Prop 8 looking for new supporters while educating the community about what's happening around the issue of marriage equality and getting them involved in the next steps towards equality. Even by starting right now, we have less than two years to change the hearts and minds of 250,000 + 1 Californians by using earned media, demonstrations, public outreach and education. To be successful we cannot just organize in areas that are supportive. We must also reach out to communities that have not traditionally been our allies in this fight to bridge the gap in understanding. We will have conversations with people, both at their doors and in busy public spaces to raise consciousness about the issue as well as funds for the cause. We will keep our community energized and engaged as activists, fighting to win back our fundamental right to marry.

You are encouraged to bring friends and family along. Please RSVP via email to volunteer@marriageequalitysd.org with the number of people you will be bringing. Let us know if you speak Spanish so we can have enough materials in Spanish.

Equality California door-to-door canvass: changing minds about marriage equality

In 2009, over 1,000 volunteers went door to door with us across the state to talk with voters about the importance of marriage equality for gay & lesbian couples. This year we’ve already talked with voters at their door in places like Santee and El Cajon. How great is that?

We know we’re on the right path, but California’s a huge state and we have to change the minds of 800 San Diegans this year alone or we WILL continue to lose this fight.

For our door-to-door canvass we’re gathering a team of volunteers to go in pairs to neighborhoods that mainly voted Yes on Prop 8, and we’re having conversations at the door about voters' stance on marriage. Currently in San Diego 25% of the people we talk to come closer to supporting marriage for LGBT couples. We prepare you with a great training and role play then pair you up with a volunteer who’s canvassed before.

It’s really important that we get all of our supporters out with us doing this important work. We all need to do our part.

Check out this quote from an article on their website.

Gay, Inc - The Puppets of the Big Union Bosses

Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director, "The decision by the leadership of the gay left to support the Arizona boycott over an issue totally unrelated to gay rights shows just how beholden they are to the union bosses."
Believing in the importance of providing music for all, the mission of the Notre Temps String Ensemble, Inc. is to provide access to string music making to the members of the community regardless of musical experience or age.

Through structured rehearsals and concerts the ensemble members will gain basic knowledge in music making in a non-competitive setting.

The Notre Temps String Ensemble is a community based orchestra founded in 2008 under the direction of Michael Tagart. It exists to provide opportunities for music making to individuals who otherwise would not be given them. It is rare that the chance to meet in an orchestral setting is provided to people outside of well funded schools or those who dedicated much of their childhood to learning an instrument. In an effort to promote the highest standards possible, most existing community orchestras have audition requirements for entrance or age restrictions.

Notre Temps (Our Time) String Ensemble is comprised of over twenty members varying in age and ability level. These members come from all walks of life and represent many of the communities throughout the greater San Diego area. Connected by their love for music, the ensemble is not only an educational experience, but a social setting as well. It is through this love for music that our members are able to transcend the stigmas typically associated with playing an instrument later in life. The Notre Temps String Ensemble welcomes both members who have played their respective instruments earlier in life, or those who have recently made the decision to learn to play.

The Notre Temps String Ensemble does not hold entrance auditions and any member of the community is warmly welcomed to join. Seating arrangements are fashioned to provide an optimal experience both musically and socially to its members. The repertoire is selected for its beauty and playability.

The ensemble anticipates expanding its activities to provide music related opportunities to others throughout the community. Through our community involvement, the Notre Temps String Ensemble hopes to convey the message that music is for everyone.
The Center has partnered with The San Diego Food Bank. 9 am until the food is gone. Booths for signing up for food stamps and other services open at 8 am. People start lining up for the food by 8 am. The food is normally gone by 10 am.
Through our Community Food Distribution Program, The San Diego Food Bank (SDFB) feeds over 1,600 families each month. Products such as fresh fruits and vegetables and assorted cans are a few of the items you might find at any of our ten distribution sites.
The SDFB partners with non-profits to help distribute a minimum of 12 pallets of food each week. There are absolutely no requirements to receive food from our community food distributions.
In addition to this, we’re launching our Community Cares Project. Our goal is to provide a “one –stop-shop” where people can receive emergency food, pre-screen for Food Stamps and sign up for a range of other services including housing, employment, medical as well as low cost utility programs. Talking about TINA is a group for HIV+ men who use crystal methamphetamine. Through the group setting, we offer a safe and nonjudgmental space to talk about ambivalence related to meth use, relationships, community norms, health issues, sex, and past and present struggles with drug use. The group also includes education and skill-building training that focus on strategies to limit the harm associated with drug use, identify triggers, prevent relapse, increase positive supports, and improve sexual health.

Equality California volunteer recruitment phone bank: call to build our team!

In 2009, over 1,000 volunteers went door to door with us to talk with voters about the importance of marriage equality for gay & lesbian couples. This year we’ve already talked with voters at their door in places like Santee and El Cajon. How great is that?

We know we’re on the right path, but California’s a huge state and we have to change the minds of 800 San Diegans this year alone or we WILL continue to lose this fight. Currently, we don't have enough volunteers on our team to meet this goal.

That's why we're on the phones every Tuesday and Thursday night, calling our supporters and signing up new volunteers. New and experienced phone bankers are welcome -- we go through a great training with you so you'll be well prepared to sign up some new volunteers and help build the team that's going to win marriage back! We also pair you with experienced coaches to support you through your whole shift. This is the most effective way to get more supporters to join the crucial work of going door-to-door to change hearts and minds about same-sex marriage.

It’s really important that we get all of our supporters out with us doing this important work. We all need to do our part.

Join us from 6-9pm any Tuesday or Thursday night at our office, 4506 30th Street, SD 92116 (North Park/Normal Heights).

At long last, OCEAN SQUARES is back. Tons of fun!!

Now that the long, drawn-out election is over, Ocean Squares is dancing again, tonight, Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at Pilgrim Hall in Pilgrim United Church, 2020 Chestnut Street, Carlsbad, CA, from 7 to 9 pm.
Pilgrim Hall is next to and attached to the church (unless we get shunted to the nursery again!). Pilgrim Church is on the northeast corner of Chestnut and Monroe, in Carlsbad. No—not the Mormon Temple—the opposite corner!
From the 78, exit El Camino, go south to Chestnut and turn right, down to Monroe. Church is on the near right corner. Small parking off Chestnut, and more parking around the corner.
We invite you to join us for an enjoyable evening of square dancing. Everyone is invited, whether you already know how to square dance or not. We will show you how! You don’t need a partner, and there is no dress code.
We are one of twelve gay square dance clubs in southern California, and about 85 in the U.S., Canada, and several other countries, including Japan and Denmark!
Hope to see you tonight!
